 How to Calculate WASSCE Grades

Calculating your WASSCE grades is quite easy and simple. Take a look at the WASSCE grading system above. Take a moment and examine the "Grade" column.

You will notice that the grades are alphanumeric meaning it combines alphabets and numbers. It is the associated numbers that are used in the calculation of the final aggregates.

Each of the those grades correspond to a particular mark interval, suggesting that any student that gets an exam score falling in a certain range will get the grade associated with that mark.

For example,if  Aba obtained 65% in her WASSCE Core English subject, it means that Aba will be assigned a "B3" grade.

Now, let's learn how to calculate our aggregate. The WASSCE grading system determines a student's aggregate using the best six grades of that students, not excluding the four core subjects of Core Mathematics, Core English, Integrated Science, and Social Studies.

That simply means that your grades in the above four core subjects will count towards your final aggregate whether you do well in it or not. Your performance in them will make or break you.

Let's look at this scenario: Aba is a science student and her WASSCE results are as follows:

Table 2: Hypothetical WASSCE  Results

Subjects

Grades

Core Mathematics

C3

Core English

B2

Integrated Science

A1

Social Studies

D7

Physics

B2

Biology

C5

Chemistry

B3

Elective Maths

A1

Now, let's calculate her aggregate.
  1. Step 1: We take note of her grades for the four core subjects (Core Maths, Core English Integrated science and Social studies) and record the numbers attach to the grades. These numbers are 3 (for Core Maths), 2 (for Core English), 1 (for Integrated Science), and 7 (for Social Studies).
  2. Step 2: Select the best two grades from your Elective subjects. In this case the Elective subjects will be Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Elective Maths, since Aba is a science student. So here our best two grades from the Elective subjects: A1(Elective Maths), and B2 (Physics). The numbers attached to those grades are "1" and "2".
  3. Step 3: The final step here then will be to add up all the numbers we have recorded in steps 1 and 2. Total = 3+2+1+7+1+2 = 16.
In conclusion, Aba had Aggregate 16 in her WASSCE exam per the results displayed in Table 2.

So now, you also can easily calculate your aggregate. All the best!
