Article on School Achievement and Areas of Focus (WASSCE)

Trophy surrounded by glitter

Write an article for inclusion in your college magazine on the achievements of your school and discuss two areas on which you would like the school authorities to focus attention. (WAEC WASSCE 2000).

Here is a model answer to the above WAEC WASSCE past question:

Not too long ago, the young men of Prempeh were overcome with joy. After much effort and divine assistance, Prempeh College won its greatest prize. How does nature radiate its splendor?

Winning the National Math without Science Quiz was easy back in 1994 and 1996, when Prempeh College was widely regarded as the finest educational institution in all of Ghana and West Africa. At one point, Prempeh was so dominant that its very name was celebrated whenever a competition was conducted. But there were other moments when the school's reputation was damaged, and its pride was lost. At one point, kids from other schools would mock Prempeh students for their poor academic achievement. But we persevered through the abuse and have been working hard to reclaim our honor. We prayed frequently, and the Lord always answered. Prempeh College was able to regain its former glory after a period of 19 years.

Prempeh triumphed for a third time in the National Maths and Science Quiz on Friday, July 3, 2015, a Friday morning. Our fame must spread throughout the whole Ashanti zone. Everyone was shocked to learn this, as they had given up hope that Prempeh could ever recover. Many of the students said they prayed for the boys throughout the competition because it was so close. Although it was a close game, we were able to defeat Adisadel College and University Practice SHS by three points because God was on our side and His perfect will was established. Many former students came to boast about their stellar academic achievements to inspire the current group of students before they left to represent us at the national level. Everything they required was made available to them. They made a pact before departing for Accra to compete in the quiz to restore the school's former grandeur. They certainly did not let them down. They not only brought home the trophy, but also a GHs40,000 check for the school's coffers. They took home laptops and Ghs$2000 in cash as well.

Because "all work and no play make Jack a boring kid," Prempeh just won the inter-school sports tournament as the best school of all time. Everyone seems to be talking about the school's sports teams as of late, and many are wondering what changed over the past two years to make them so successful. A bus, an award, and $10,000 were donated to the school. We, students at Prempeh, were not completely taken aback by this information. Because our new headmaster, upon taking office, mandated that all students participate in mandatory Friday afternoon sports, our school has a greater emphasis on physical activity. All the sports, from football to volleyball, are mandatory on this day. I'll never forget his declaration that everyone possesses some innate skill, dispelling any rationale for avoiding athletics.

Ever since then, the student body has been home to a plethora of extraordinary new talents, and its athletes continue to do incredible things for the institution. Prempeh has undeniably reclaimed its former glory, but that's no reason to sit back and coast. It needs to keep up the excellent work it has been doing. I think it would be great if the school offered scholarships and other incentives to the sports team. As a result, we would become unrivalled in every sport we compete in.

I really hope that the administration will do everything they can to keep the students motivated so that Prempeh stays at the top of academics and sports.
