2.         UNDERLYING PHILOSOPHIES FOR GETTING ANY JOB YOU WANT
Everything we see around us began as a thought. Building the first aeroplane started as a thought. The houses you and I live in began as thoughts in someone’s mind. Therefore, in our job search, we will need to have the right set of thoughts if we are to succeed.

  1. Do not show desperation.
    • “Desperation” has its root in “despair”
    • Eagerness and desperation are not the same. There is a huge difference between them.
·         Desperate individuals are often taken advantage of. e.g. a desperate seller/buyer of a property gets far less the value of what he is selling
·         In negotiation, the one who overtly displays a hunger for the deal most often than not loses
o   Even if you want the deal the most, do keep a tight lid on your emotions and allow yourself to flow.
·         Desperation releases negative energy that short-circuits the flow of your personality.
·         Desperation is not an attractive trait e.g. in relationships

  1. Know Thyself
·                     Knowledge of who you are fortifies you on the inside.
o   e.g Americans (“I am an American”)
·                   A clear grasp of your strengths (what you can do) and weaknesses (what you cannot do) will negate the need to succumb to becoming what you are not. Consequently, during interviews, your sincerity and confidence will be there for all to see.
·                     Brand yourself with your strengths.

  1. Understand the Law of Averages
·         The Law of Averages says that not all seeds sown land on fertile grounds or Not all actions will yield the desired result.
o   The key to getting this Law working in your favour is to embrace this universal truth and just keep on dropping your applications, everywhere and anywhere.
·         Not every job application will lead to an interview and not all interviews will lead to us landing a job
o   This is because of the Law of Averages, which says that not all seeds sown land on fertile grounds.
·         For every set of actions, there is a unique success ratio.
o   Suppose we drop 10 job applications and we receive 2 job interviews, our success ratio for getting job interviews is 20 % (2/10 x 100%).
o   Therefore, if we wish to increase the number of job interviews we get to say 10, we must send out at least 50 job applications.

  1. Understand that employers do not care much about certificates of applicants, but rather what they’ve got to offer by way of value to the company
·         In recent times, employers do not care much about certificates because certificates have now become commonplace.
o   You see, thousands of graduates are ‘churned’ from the universities annually, all competing for similar job positions with you.
o   Illustration: In the ‘80s in Ghana, soaps were a rare commodity but now they are not.
§  The soap manufacturing companies now have to find a way to sell their product by “branding” the soap.
§  Branding simply means “marking”. This must occur over a long period of time.
·         Products and services are marked with a “particular attribute” e.g. Imperial Leather and Luxury (Attribute)
·         If we must rise above the competition, we must begin to see certificates as that which grants us audience with the employer.

  1. Acquire an intimate knowledge, as far as it is possible, of the company you are applying to, such that you can ‘rattle’ off the information from the top of your head.
·         What do you know about the company to which you are applying?
·         Do a thorough background check of that company through
o   Google:
§  Set up a Google alert for the company
§  Search for news items about the company via Google News
§  Visit the company’s site if they have one and devour every information available
·         Use that information to brainstorm ideas for the company
·         Note down the following about the company
o   Their history
o   Their Vision and mission statements
o   Core values
o   Challenges
o   Products/Services
o   Social Media
§  Facebook:
·         Search for their Facebook page and analyze their posts to get a feel of the nature of the company.
·         Check the date they last posted. This info could prove useful later on.
·         If they are not on Facebook too, do please take note of that.

·         Task: List any 50 companies you will like to work with.

  1. Think like the CEO of the company to which you are applying for a job.
·         Prepare a vision statement for the position you are applying.
o   This vision statement should clearly indicate what you are bringing on board to the company.
o   The document should contain insightful ideas which when implemented would add value to the company and move it forward.
o   Remember that once you are employed, it is not your certificate which would be doing the work but YOU!

  1. Certifications usually do not get you jobs; it is who you are as a brand that secures you one.
    • Become known for something (Branded).
o   Research, Typing, administration, secretarial work etc
    • Define and build your brand as a person.
o   What are you very good at?
o    What makes you special?
o   Refine, develop and use that/those trait(s) to brand yourself

  1. Searching for a job is a job – let’s start treating it as such.
    • Searching for a job consumes time, energy, money and may or may not yield monetary results.
    • The monetary result of job search is getting a job that earns us money.

 In Summary
A Job is anything that consumes your time, energy, or money and may or may not yield monetary results in the short or long term.
