Patching in Sewing

Other than sewing, patching may be used to fix holes. Small pieces of material are used to patch ripped garments, which is to say, to hide a hole or stain on a fabric. Alternatively, patching is a technique for replacing worn sections of cloth with sturdy pieces of material. In order to make the patch stand out, use materials with similar patterns, hues, and textures. Squares, rectangles, and even triangles may be carved out of the patch at will. It's possible to utilise patchwork on any soft-finishing material. Selvedge threads should match selvedge threads and weft to weft on the patch to ensure that it covers the hole.

Instead of darning, we'd rather sew on patches to cover up rips and tears. Patching may be done in two ways: 1) Patching by hand using thread and needle; and 2) Patching with a sewing machine.

In the Chief Examiner report on BDT Home Economics for the 2013 BECE, it was found that the majority of the candidates gave print patch and calico patch as the two ways patching can be done. This was in fact wrong per the chief examiner’s report. Those answers were in fact incorrect, and so many students sitting for that year's BECE lost valuable marks.

Patching requires a variety of materials:

  • Using a needle and thread
  • Textile fabrics that are similar in colour and texture
  • Sewing machines

How to mend a hole in a garment.

To repair a piece of clothing, choose a fabric that is a match or close enough in colour and texture to the original.

The size of the rip or hole should be taken into consideration when determining how much material has to be removed.

Set the sewing machine to the proper stitch length and width.

Place the patch and cloth on the fabric.

Begin to stitch.
